In this week’s Dashboard update, we continue to note a higher rate of vaccination among women, by about 10 percentage points.
A recent New York Times article by Jennifer Steinhauer, The vaccination gender gap: Women are getting shots at a higher rate than men describes some reasons why, even though men are more likely to die from COVID-19:
- Women are prevalent in occupations (health care workers and teachers) offered vaccines early in the process
- Women are a larger proportion of those over 70, also offered vaccines early
- Women engage in preventative healthcare more often
- Women left jobs to take on managing remote schooling and caring for parents and sick relatives and are motivated to both protect those family members and be vaccinated in order to reenter the workforce
