VCW Executive Director Cary Brown presented this talk on September 13, 2021 as part of the UVM School of Medicine's Gender Equity Initiative Education Series. Setting the context for this conversation, Cary incorporates women’s unpaid labor and caregiving roles, and then addresses the pandemic’s impact to women’s workforce participation, including the most recent state data available, and closes with policy solutions for recovery.
June 2021 | Leaders for Equity and Equal Pay (LEEP) Toolkit Launch
Change The Story VT, the partnership initiative of Vermont Works for Women, Vermont Commission on Women, and the Vermont Women's Fund, launched a new Leaders for Equity and Equal Pay (LEEP) Toolkit, a free DIY resource empowering Vermont’s small to mid-size employers with the tools they need to conduct gender and racial pay equity reviews. Those who attended the lunch hour event were introduced to the innovative new Equity Management Tool and its companion Playbook, learned more about pay equity from a national expert, and were inspired by the stories of Vermont employers who have implemented workplace pay equity practices.

Vermont Lt. Governor Molly Gray hosted an International Women’s Day “Seat at the Table” conversation on The Economic Well-Being of Vermont Women with Xusana Davis, the Executive Director of Racial Equity for the State of Vermont, Jessica Nordhaus, the Director of Change the Story VT, Meg Smith, the Director of the Vermont Women's Fund and VCW's Executive Director Cary Brown. Panelists presented data and discussed policy changes and initiatives addressing short-term and long-term economic needs of Vermont women as our state responds to and recovers from COVID-19.
January 2021 | Legislative After-Dinner Coffee & Conversation: The Disproportionate Impact of COVID-19
VCW started the 2021 legislative session with this event examining how the COVID-19 pandemic impacts economic aspects of women’s lives, especially for women of color in our state. The digital event took place Thursday evening, January 14th and featured a panel discussion with experts, an exploration of issues in small breakout room conversations, and a wrap-up Q & A session. Panelists included VCW Commissioner Kiah Morris, Executive Director of Mercy Connections Lisa Falcone, and UVM Professor of Economics Stephanie Seguino. This event was moderated by VCW Executive Director Cary Brown.
June 2019 | Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace | Vermont Attorney General’s Small Business Initiative and Civil Rights Unit
Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan released this video aimed at assisting Vermont employers in understanding workplace sexual harassment laws. The video provides an overview of Vermont’s workplace sexual harassment laws and summarizes employers’ obligations under those laws. The video includes a roundtable discussion moderated by Tabitha Pohl-Moore, president of the Rutland Area Branch of the NAACP, and features Cary Brown, VCW's executive director, as well as Shirley Jefferson, the associate dean for student affairs and diversity at Vermont Law School.
March 2020 | Webinar: Lead the Way for Equal Pay: Tools and Strategies to Change The Story on Pay Equity
This dynamic webinar was presented to new and existing Equal Pay Compact signers just a few days after Governor Scott declared a state of emergency to respond to the COVID-19 public health crisis. Our event quickly pivoted from in-person to virtual, and our participants, already committed to improving the economic security of women, gained new knowledge, tools, and resources to close the gender wage gap.

This is the video designed for employers to help them understand and comply with the law requiring they provide reasonable accommodations for an employee’s pregnancy-related condition, unless it would impose an undue hardship on the employer. This law closed a gap in state and federal employment law to ensure workers experiencing healthy, uncomplicated pregnancies are entitled to reasonable accommodations under the law when required. The Vermont Commission on Women worked with the Vermont Department of Health, the Civil Rights Unit of the Office of the Vermont Attorney General, and the Vermont Human Rights Commission to create these informative videos.
